 Acupuncture FAQs

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of thin, sterile, single-use needles at various points on the body in order to help it heal itself. Originating in ancient China, acupuncture is one of the oldest, most common, and most dependable medical therapies received in the world.

How can acupuncture help me?

An extensive body of research has shown acupuncture to be effective for a number of conditions. In our experience, acupuncture can alleviate pain, reduce stress, boost immunity, stabilize emotions, regulate hormones, assist recovery, improve digestion, support skin, manage pregnancy, and promote fertility. It is particularly helpful for chronic conditions, or conditions that can be managed but not cured.

Can I address more than one health concern at once?

Yes! However, we recommend keeping the list of health concerns you ask us to address to no more than three.

Does acupuncture hurt? What does it feel like?

You may feel a mild “poke” sensation when a needle goes in, but it should go away quickly. It is also normal to experience warmth, heaviness/tugging, itching, a dull “that’s the spot” ache, or nothing at all! If any uncomfortable sensations persist, let us know.

How does acupuncture work?

Scientists are still trying to figure this out, in all likelihood because the mechanism behind the broad, strong, and lasting effects of acupuncture encompasses not just one factor, but numerous reactions going on at once that involve multiple bodily systems. As simple as acupuncture looks on the outside, just imagine the complexity it could involve on the inside.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on what you want to address, how long it’s been going on, and your overall health. In general, short-term (acute) issues respond more quickly than long-term (chronic) issues. For most conditions you should expect to come in for a series of consistent treatments before you experience significant relief.

Are the needles reused?

No! After a single use they go straight into a biohazard container.

Can I still get acupuncture if I’m pregnant?

Yes! In fact, there are a number of reasons why an expectant person would want to get acupuncture, including nausea, heartburn, low back pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, breech baby, and labor induction.
